Elisabeth Sladen was born on February 1st, 1946 (not 1948 as many people believe. This misconception stemmed from a single occasion where Sladen’s agent was asked her year of birth and he misremembered, and it’s been taken by the media almost consistently as 1948 ever since), and became one of the most well known actresses on stage and screen. From her humble beginnings, she began her career as an Assistant Stage Manager at a Liverpudlian theatre, who eventually gave her an increasing number of acting roles.
She received incredible reviews, and it came as no surprise when she was asked to meet the casting director and Jon Pertwee when Katy Manning left Doctor Who, and both immediately took a shine to her.
When she died, on April 19th last year, perhaps the brightest star on our screens vanished, but her light will shine for decades to come on all who remember and love her.
Here’s to Elisabeth Sladen. The “s” is for “star”.
